The West – 2014

Part 1 – Portland! Portland! Portland!

Our adventure began in Portland, Oregon. It was our first visit to this city. We gave it mixed reviews: superb food, great drink, lovely architecture….. but a disturbing view towards the thousands of homeless souls who slept just about everywhere downtown. It would be a hard place to live.

I kept my camera in the bag when I was holding a beer mug. In Portland, I was holding a beer mug most of my time. Consequently I have very few pictures of this city. I did do some transit shooting, so here are my results.

You will get the flavour of this funky and vibrant town.

I also got to stick my head inside a pressure vessel that’s a bit large for brewing malt. And, I got the best RSD-5 shot I have ever taken.

The Oregon Coast

After Portland, we drove to Lincoln City, which is a Wasaga-like beach town. We had three days of walking on the beach and generally doing nothing.

That’s our balcony with the red-stained railing. We ate salmon. We drank craft beer. I particularly liked Cavatica Stout, brewed by Fort George Brewing in Astoria OR.

Three days on the beach were certainly food for the soul!

Seattle

I didn’t take many pictures in Seattle either.

We found it to be a nice, clean big city with lots of ways to get around. The Boeing Museum was particularly enjoyable. We continued our intensive study of west-coast craft breweries and wineries. And we ate more salmon. Enough said.

We toured Bainbridge Island, which is a quick ferry ride away. It’s a pretty little small townish suburb with a great gelateria. They have a fascinating museum documenting the internment of the local Japanese American community during World War II. It was this community that was documented by Ansel Adams during their incarceration. Adams’ photos, and a quite moving video, are highlights of the museum tour.
